Forged over billions of years Scotlands truly spectacular geological landscape, sculpted continuously throughout time by the ever upward thrusting tectonic plates pushing skywards a great variety of rock types and formations, creating as they shift and slide the majestic mountains, glens, islands, lochs, crags and rocky ridges Scotland has justifiably become famous for worldwide.
Bejewelled with over 35,000 sparkling freshwater lochs and lochans, 50 river systems and more than 6,000 miles of mostly rugged coastline – in excess of 11,500 if you include its numerous islands – it is little surprise then that so many Scottish people have such an almost spiritual affinity with water.
The countless hillside burns, rivers, rivulets and underground springs that supply our lochs and estuaries with a steady stream of water are - at least in the main - clean and well oxygenated.
There can be little surprise then that Scotland is synonymous with world class angling and is renowned globally for not just the quality of its salmon angling but also the many other aspects of fishing that it offers.
For the Game angler there is an abundant choice of fishing available for Salmon, Sea-Trout, Brown Trout, Ferox, Arctic Charr and Grayling in Scotlands lochs and rivers and Rainbow Trout fishing is also available at many venues.
The Coarse angler can find Perch and Roach in many wild waters whilst the quality of the Pike fishing is truly superb with the ferocious head shaking fighting quality of Scottish pike rightly recognised as being right up there with some of the best in Europe.
For the Sea angler Scotlands coasts and islands offer fantastic sport whether the target species is specimen skate, shark, cod, pollock or mackerel the opportunities for sport are truly endless.
When the Ice Age finally retreated some 9,000 years ago the first people that began to colonise Ireland were hunter gatherers from the Mesolithic Period.
Initially settling in the north these stone age peoples nomadic lifestyle - following the availability of whatever food was available – would prove instrumental over the centuries in creating the rich tapestry of stone age ruins, medieval settlements, crumbling forts and castles that has now become the Ireland we know and love today.
Situated on Europes western extremity with both its northern and southern inshore waters warmed by the Atlantic Drift allows Ireland to bask in a mild and temperate climate.
With a huge 16,000 mile network of rivers and tributaries, more than 500,000 acres of loughs and a coastline of roughly 2,000 miles it is easy to see why the Emerald Isle delivers such a unique and exhilarating angling experience.
Green rolling hills, breathtaking sea vistas, dramatic towering cliffs, raging seas, wind swept craggy coastlines and much, much, more all await those who make the journey across the Irish Sea.
The Game angler is very well catered for in Ireland with superb Salmon, Sea-Trout and Brown Trout fishing. Whilst the salmon fishing is excellent it is perhaps the Brown Trout - ‘Breac Geal’ in Gaelic - fishing that eclipses all others with the two great Western loughs of Mask and Corrib - with their legendary mayfly hatches - stealing the limelight for all the right reasons.
The Coarse angler will not have to look far, throughout the majority of Irelands waterways, to find top quality Pike, Perch, Roach, Rudd, Carp, Bream, Dace and Eel fishing. However, it is the size of its Pike that is particularly noteworthy with Esox lucius well in excess of 20 lb being relatively commonplace and in some waters Pike of over 40 lb are known to lie in wait.
The Sea angler really is spoilt for choice, whether targetting his quarry from the shore - along the many miles of rocky coastline, estuaries and sandy bays - or for the more adventurous fishing in deep water aboard a charter boat, Ireland has an international sea angling reputation second to none.
